2018 was a spectacular year for me. I accomplished a lot of achievements in 2018.
I started 2018 as a sub engineer working at Tilakpur, Khanne Khola Dam Construction Project in Kanchanpur, Nepal. After working my ass off for 9 months between 2017 & 2018, I was tired doing my regular job. It was frosting cold outside during the end of 2017 but I had to do my job.
I left from home at 6:30 am wearing a jacket in the morning of winter when it was freaking dark & cold outside. I didn’t know how to ride a motorcycle. So I used to go out on a bicycle with a bag full of measuring instruments.
I used to reach the construction site, a river bank, at around 8 am, nearly after riding on a bicycle for 2 hours. Every day, the site was covered with fog as it was cold winter. But the labors and excavators were already there before I showed up and they were doing their job.
I had to pull off my shoes and enter the cold river water in the mornings of winter to survey the area. You know the hardest part was to believe that the poor labors used to live at river side in a small plastic tent day and night without feeling cold. That fact made me strong to not feel pity on myself because at least I had a full facilitated home to stay at night. I realized that there are more people suffering more pain than me. So I was convinced to enjoy my job for 9 months.
Finally, I was so tired that my body gave up. I lost 20 kg weight during those 9 months period. I lost my patience and my body said no, you can’t do this. I finally left the job. There was no holiday for me. I had to attend the site 7 days a week without taking a day off.
I can’t explain the feeling when I wake up next day after quitting my job. I woke up late at 8 am in the morning. I didn’t have to pull off my shoes and get my legs into cold river water. Instead, my mom served me hot tea. Despite making a lot of money from that project, the job sucked. I enjoyed a lot on the first day after returning from work.
My body suffered so bad that my brain started to say, “No! You can’t return back to that shitty job.” That was the moment when I decided to be my own boss.
Accomplishment #1: Adsense Approved
I returned to my blog, the one that you are reading right now. Advanced Blog was initially created in 2016, but due to my study, job and career, I couldn’t give it much time. It was stuck and couldn’t make any money. At a glance, my blog was not monetized.
So I decided to go full time on my blog with money on my mind. But the problem was there are thousands of methods to make money out of it. The easiest was affiliate marketing. I was super excited for it I even started attending a paid online course on Udemy.
After doing a research for a while, my heart broke again knowing the fact that affiliate marketing isn’t possible in Nepal due to lack of online payment gateways like PayPal or MasterCard. The hardest part was to verify tax information if you are being affiliated by a foreign affiliate program like Amazon, no matter how hard you try.
The only way to make money out of my blog was Google’s own Adsense. So my ultimate goal was to get approved by Adsense. With 10 post published on my site, I finally got adsense approved for the first time in my life since 2016. I even posted that approval email screenshot on my Instagram account due to excitement.
Here is what I have learned about Adsense approval process during the time at a glance.
- Niche selection does matters.
- Brand your site.
- Use a professional email address.
- Read Adsense Program Policies one by one and make sure that you are not violating any rules.
- the page structure, site design and load speed should be perfect or better than average.
- you must create your own seo optimized images for each blog posts. Even if you are using royalty free images like the one downloaded from Pixabay, edit them a little bit and then upload.
- & a lot more like uniqueness of articles, 1000+ words per article, etc.
I would also like to thank to Harsh Aggarwal (Founder of Shout Me Loud)’s Adsense Mastery Guide. It helped me a lot during adsense approval process. You can go ahead and check it out after reading this if you are trying to approve adsense on your website or blog.
Accomplishment #2: Improvement in Traffic & Alexa Rank
If you don’t know what Alexa rank is, it is a system of ranking websites globally according to its performance and website traffic.
Lower number in Alexa rank means your website is doing well. Higher number means it needs improvements. When I quit my job, the Alexa rank of Advanced Blog was above 6 million. That means 6 million websites were already getting more traffic than me and it was below them. It hardly received 10-20 visitors per day then.
Now my blog gets more than 100+ visitors per day in 3 months period and its Alexa rank is around 1.5 million. I know it is not a big number and still not enough to make $100 USD per month through adsense. But improvement is improvement, no matter big or small.
I am not working full time on my blog yet because I’m focused on something else which brings you to my next accomplishment.
Accomplishment #3: Starting As a Graphic Designer
I am a huge fan of 3D animations and cartoons. I don’t know about kids these days, but I spent my childhood watching the likes of Disney’s Aladdin & Tarzan. I also watched Timon & Pumba, The Lion King, Kim Possible, Mickey Mouse, Buzz Light Year, and a lot more. Ice Age is a movie but I used to watch that too. Tell me your most favorite childhood cartoon that you watched the most in comments below.
I was so addicted to these stuffs that it became my hobby to create my own animated cartoon film in the future. My dream almost came into reality when I heard about software called Blender. It is always free and open source. It’s been 6 months since I’ve been learning blender and it is easy and fun.
One thing that I have realized about 3D or 2D animation is that you will need a team to make a complete movie. You will also need an advanced computer with good CPU and graphics card to get images rendered.
And thanks to blender’s 2.80 beta version as of late, rendering is quite fast in real-time with new EEVEE engine. 2D animations are easier to create with the help of new grease pencil tool in Blender. A single person can create and animate entire film without needing a team for 2D Animation.
Not to mention that, I have also been learning SideFX‘s Houdini. I’m on the starting phase and I haven’t completed the basics yet because it’s a complex program to master.
And I started my YouTube channel on May 1, which is not so popular yet due to lack of ideas but I’m still working. Here is the secret; I don’t use Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects to edit my YT videos. I use Pinnacle Studio Ultimate along with Windows Movie Maker to decorate the clips.
Accomplishment #4: Winning the Gold in Boxing
I even uploaded a vlog about this on my YouTube channel that you can watch here.
It feels great to know that I am undefeated in amateur boxing. I went to Kathmandu and made my amateur boxing debut. I won the tournament and became the champion. On Decembers 11, 2018 I beat a local boxer in my district. I got selected for regional boxing tournament in light heavyweight division (81 kg). You can take part in 8th national games after winning it.
What is next for me?
As of now, my ultimate goal is to win the regional boxing tournament. I won a fight yesterday and I am selected from my district. But I don’t know whether I will be able to play on regional tournament because I am done with boxing.
Now I am preparing for the upcoming boxing tournament and I aim to remain undefeated.
The reason that I am leaving boxing is the internal politics going on inside the training center. I don’t know what the problem is with the coaches. They show up every day, make us lined up & after we have done stretching with 3 rounds of shadow boxing, they leave.
There is nothing new for us inside the hall. We have to train by ourselves. It’s the same old routine and I’m afraid, we cannot win any more competition that way. It scares me because the sport is not cricket or soccer. It is boxing and with a small mistake, we could lose our lives.
And without any skills, I am not willing to step into the ring again. I don’t know how I won the previous tournament but it was because of my heart. If there is no training, there is no competition.
I don’t know what’s going through the head of coaches. There are 3 of them posted by the government but none of them shows up to train. They talk for few moments and leave us to die. That is humiliating me and every player in the training center. Our coaches are government servants who enjoy the salary provided by country. And they refuse to do their job, which is to train us.
So I am quitting boxing and rather focusing on bodybuilding. I joined a new gym couple of days ago. And when I am through it, I will be back again to run Advanced Blog.
That’s it guys. I am planning to quit boxing soon to make money. But when I come back, I will bring you something special.
