Changing domain incorrectly could be harmful as you could lose SEO, rankings and organic traffic. You should perform some tasks and learn to be patience so that the blog could recover from those impacts.

A few days ago, I changed my blog URL to advancedblog.com . I knew that setting up a custom domain wasn’t enough for my site. I have to rebuild and relaunch my blog.

Therefore I have prepared a checklist of things to perform after changing the domain of a blog so that it becomes easy to perform tasks.

Things To Do After Changing Your Domain Name

Here is a list of things that we should keep in mind after changing our blog’s domain name:

1. Change Blog’s Title

The practice of keeping same keywords in blog title and domain is considered good for SEO. So change your blog title according to your domain once a domain name is changed.

To Change title of your blog, simply visit Blogger>>Dashboard>>Settings>>Title and modify according to your choice.

2. Find and replace broken links

If a link expires or no longer works then it is said to be a broken or dead link. Internal links which you might have inserted in old posts will be dead after changing blog’s domain and a “404 Error” page will be displayed when someone clicks on them. So it is necessary to identify such links and replace them with new link of the post.

Free Broken Link Checker is best tool to find dead links of your site at once.

3. Redirect Old Domain To New

You cannot leave your old domain in a corner that has eyes of your previous followers. If you have already established a brand then old customers will visit your blog through the old domain name. So redirect your old domain to new domain. For example, mayaprakash.com.np redirects to my current homepage.

4. Resubmit Domain and Sitemap To Search Engines
Submitting sitemaps and domains to search engines allow sites to be indexed on search pages. It gives us organic traffic which is a lot better than paid one.

If you have already added an old domain to search engines, then it will not work for you. You have to resubmit your new domain to Google Webmasters Tools and other search engines so that you can be found.

5. Submit site to blog directories
If are a blogger, then you already know that submitting sites to blog directories increase backlinks for your site. If you have submitted your old domain then update those blog directories with your new domain name.

6. Update Google Analytics
Your Google Analytics account for old domain will no longer work for your new site. So keep it updated with your new domain address.
